A 21-year-old chased by villagers who suspected him to be a burglar died after he fell into a quarry on Monday.
B. Vijay, a resident of Mitta Dinna Halli in Dharmapuri district, had come to Salem on Sunday to attend a car festival and visit his uncle at Narayanampalayam near Omalur. He was accompanied by his friends K. Velliangiri and S. Meganathan (17). Around 9 p.m. on Sunday, the three left for Dharmapuri on a bike and stopped for a while at Adaikkanur, when they were spotted by local villagers who, suspecting them to be burglars, started chasing them. The three began running when Vijay fell into a stone quarry and died. Since it was dark, he could not be located. The police were alerted, who arrived at the spot and seized the bike the three youths were travelling on.
Vijay’s body was located on Monday evening, and police rushed to the spot and sent the body to Salem Government Hospital for postmortem. Police have registered a case and are investigating. Since there were a number of theft incidents reported in the village, villagers chased the youths suspecting that they were burglars.
