Andhra Pradesh registered its second casualty due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) on Sunday when a 45-year-old woman succumbed to it in the Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH).

A 10-year-old boy died due to GBS in Srikakulam district on February 11.

“The woman, identified as B. Kamalamma of Prakasam district, was admitted in the GGH on February 2. She contracted GBS on January 30, but had been taken to other hospitals before being admitted in the GGH, where she died on Sunday while undergoing treatment. She had suffered cardiac arrest thrice during her treatment and for the fourth time on Sunday,” U. Aruna Kumari, associate professor, Department of Neurology, Guntur Medical College (GMC), told The Hindu.

“We put her on ventilator on admission. She was given the full course of Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIg), but she did not respond to the treatment,” Dr. Aruna Kumari said.

“Kamalamma’s health condition did not improve despite efforts made as per guidelines. She died as GBS affected her heart, along with other body muscles,” said S.S.V. Ramana, GGH Superintendent.

“Another woman patient aged 65 from Guntur is on ventilator, but she is responding to treatment,” Dr. Ramana said, adding that yet another patient would be discharged from the hospital on Monday or Tuesday. An 8-year-old girl, admitted with GBS, recovered recently, he said. “Children recover swiftly,” he added. “There have been patients getting admitted to the hospital with GBS throughout the year,” he said.
