Telangana Police filed a closure in the Rohith Vemula death case absolving Union Minister Smriti Irani and 3 others. Vemula was a PhD scholar at Hyderabad Central University, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in hostel room on Jan 17, 2016. He was allegedly upset over disciplinary actions taken against him by the university. A political slugfest erupted in 2016 after Rohith’s death because of his Dalit caste identity. Several human rights activists, politicians called him ‘Dalit’ and held Government responsible for his death. Taking the issue to the floor of the House, Rahul Gandhi claimed that Rohith was killed as he was a Dalit. However, then India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj clarified that Rohith was not a ‘Dalit’. Now, after the Telangana Police closed Rohith’s case, BJP launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi. Amit Malviya sought an apology from Rahul Gandhi saying “He politicise Vemula’s death for his ugly politics”. However, on Vemula’s family’s appeal, Telangana DGP said that they will investigate the case further. The family members of Rohith Vemula submitted a representation to Telangana CM Revanth Reddy on Rohith’s death case.
