Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s middle-order batter Glenn Maxwell had a poor Indian Premier League 2024. In the ongoing season, he made 52 runs from 10 games at an average of 5.78. His poor returns in the first half have cost RCB as there was instability in the middle order and eventually, he was replaced by England’s Will Jacks.
However, as Jacks returned to England for National duty Maxwell has returned to the side for the playoffs. On Wednesday, though the stage was set for him to finish off his innings and help RCB post a decent total in the first innings, however, Maxwell got out the first ball. More than him getting it is the way he got out that sparked criticism against him. “What on earth was that from Glenn Maxwell?,” former England player Kevin Pietersen would question during commentary.
After Cameron Green fell and RCB was reduced to 97-3 Maxwell of the first ball of his innings would loft it straight to Dhruv Jurel at long-on for a boundary and depart for a golden duck pushing his side into further misery. “This is a huge game, you need your biggest players to perform, you need to give yourself a chance. That from Glenn Maxwell isn’t good enough,” he added.
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan too would react to the shot and post his opinion on X (formerly known as Twitter). “What was Maxwell doing?” he wrote.
RCB’s winning streak ends
Rajasthan Royals ended Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s roller-coaster run in the Indian Premier League with a scrappy four-wicket win in the Eliminator. After their bowlers had done their part well to keep RCB to 172/8, RR batters stuttered in the middle overs to allow RCB back into the contest which remained hung in balance for the majority of the second half, but the 2008 winners eventually got home with an over to spare.
Chasing 173, Rajasthan ended with 174/6 as Rovman Powell provided the finishing touches in a tense finish. As he has done several times before this season, Riyan Parag showcased deep resolve in an adverse situation to help Rajasthan stay alive in the tournament. It was Royals’ first win after four losses and an abandoned game.
