Uber Cup 2024, India vs Singapore Highlights: A young Indian women’s team assured themselves of a place in the knockouts as the beat Singapore in a Group A Uber Cup 2024 match in Chengdu, China on Sunday.

Unlike Saturday, Ashmita Chaliha couldn’t provide India a winning start as she went down in straight games against world No 18 Yeo Jia Min in the opening match. Priya Konjengbam – Shruti Mishra, however, registered a straight-games win to bring India level. The impressive Isharani Baruah made it two wins out of two after that, as she beat Insyirah Khan in straight games. Simran Singhi – Ritika Thaker then closed out the tie by winning the second doubles match. Anmol Kharb then completely the formality with another win in a 5th match of a team tie, something of a habit for her now.

India’s place in the quarterfinals was confirmed when overwhelming favourites China beat Canada 5-0 later in the day.

India kicked off their Uber Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Canada in the Group A encounter, led by Ashmita Chaliha’s upset win against Canada’s Michelle Li, ranked 28 places above her. National champs Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra then doubled India’s lead , before Isharani Baruah clinched the tie. Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker lost the second doubles rubber but rising star Anmol Kharb sealed a 4-1 win.

Uber Cup: Isharani Baruah, with a jump smash in the Akane Yamaguchi mould, is pure joy to watch

The jump drop mixed with the leaping clears are slowly gentrifying Isharani Baruah’s wild, untamed, no-care-in-the world free jump smash. Big cities like Bangalore tend to do that, but perhaps the dashing teenager from Dibrugarh in Assam, needs the sophistication of mixing fast drops and half smashes and clears with the dizzy airborne smash, to sustain her badminton.

Isharani started with a comfortable straight sets win against Canada playing second singles in the Uber Cup where India has fielded a callow bunch of girls – not yet women – in the absence of PV Sindhu, who opted out. (Read more from Shivani Naik)
