Ricky Ponting compares Travis Head to Adam Gilchrist, praising his fearless approach and impactful performances, while cautioning against labelling him a cricketing ‘great’ just yet.
Australian batter Travis Head continues to be a big challenge for India across all cricket formats. His recent performance in the IND vs AUS at Adelaide Oval, where he scored 140 runs, helped Australia level the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has drawn comparisons between Head and ICC Hall of Famer Adam Gilchrist.
In the first innings of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, Head’s aggressive 140-run knock off 141 balls gave Australia a substantial lead. This contribution played a crucial role in Australia’s comprehensive ten-wicket victory. After this knock, Head has climbed to No.5 in the latest ICC Men’s Test batting rankings.
Ponting’s high praise for Head
Ricky Ponting believes Travis Head is on the path to greatness in world cricket, though he cautions against labelling him a ‘great’ prematurely. “He’s on the way to being one of those (greats),” Ponting told ICC Review. “I don’t think you can call him a great just yet. That’s no knock on what he’s doing because what he’s doing has been spectacular. And a lot of the times, it’s been when his team’s needed him the most,” he added.
Head has consistently delivered in crucial matches, including the ICC World Test Championship Final and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final in the past 18 months.
Comparisons with Adam Gilchrist
Ponting likened Head’s playing style to that of Adam Gilchrist, noting their similar aggressive approach. “The way that Head plays is in a very similar way to the way that Gilchrist played, albeit a couple of positions higher in the batting order. Gilly was a six or seven, and Travis is doing his damage at No.5.” he added.
Ponting on Head’s positive attitude
Ponting attributes Head’s success to his fearless attitude and positive approach to the game.“It’s Travis’s attitude that allows him to play the way that he’s played. He’s not scared of getting out. He doesn’t care about the negative result. He’s only seeing the positive outcome in everything that he does.”
