Thomas and Uber Cup 2024, Day 1 highlights: The Indian men’s team, who are the defending world champions, began Thomas Cup campaign on a winning note against Thailand in Chengdu at the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals. HS Prannoy, Satwik-Chirag, Srikanth Kidambi and Lakshya Sen created history in Bangkok when India won the Thomas Cup for the first time in history. And they were all in action against Thailand in their Group C opener.

Prannoy, 2023 world championships bronze medallist, went down in the opening match of the tie against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. But Satwik-Chirag brought India back into the tie with a battling win, to make it 1-1. In the second singles tie too, India were pushed to the distance as Lakshya Sen had to overcome a mid-match blip to win in three games. The tie was clinched by Dhruv Kapil and MR Arjun in the 2nd doubles tie. In the end, Srikanth completed the formalities with a dominant performance.

Earlier in the day, Ashmita Chaliha defeated higher-ranked Michelle Li to give India a superb start in a crucial Uber Cup Group A tie in Chengdu on Saturday, as they went on to win 4-1. Priya Konjengbam – Shruti Mishra, doubles national champions, then gave India a 2-0 lead. Isharani Baruah then clinched the tie for India as she defeated higher-ranked Wen Yu Zhang. Then national champion Anmol Kharb, who was the star performer for India en route their maiden Asia Team Championships title, also pulled of a solid win to seal the tie 4-1.

Indian women gained automatic qualification for the Uber Cup 2024 Finals after a sensational week at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia earlier this year. A semifinal spot would have assured them their spot but they went the distance to clinch the title, overcoming a series of higher-ranked opponents. That title, albeit in a depleted field, was a shot in the arm for the women’s badminton contingent in the country, where the big wins have often come in individual tournaments.
