Enjoying appreciation from bitter critic

The joy that you experience when your most bitter critic appreciates your work is different. ED sleuths must have felt the same on Thursday after a Supreme Court bench, which is most critical of the agency’s work, said something in its favour albeit on a “lighter note”. A bench headed by justice Abhay Oka, during the hearing of a case, remarked that “ED can be right sometimes”. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta wasted no time in receiving the compliment with his own value addition. “We (ED) are usually right but are sometimes unable to convince the Lordship,” Mehta remarked smilingly.

SC bench shocked and enraged

Astate counsel’s argument — that the Supreme Court cannot reappreciate evidence in a criminal appeal — left a bench both shocked and enraged. The counsel went on to remark that the argument is in “terrorem”. The remark did not sit well with the bench which said that the Supreme Court judges can take criticism. But the bench also warned the counsel that it will not be “bogged down” with such criticism. The lawyer tendered an apology, but the bench refused to budge and asked for the advocate general of the state.

Ganga Pollution

Recently, RJD MLA Mukesh Yadav brought a bottle of Ganga water in the Bihar assembly and displayed it during the question hour. Highlighting that the water was highly polluted despite the government’s claims, Yadav asked about the status of the Namami Gange project.
