T20 World Cup Final: Unfortunate accident in Trinidad leaves South African team & ICC officials stranded

South Africa, fresh from decimating Afghanistan in the first semifinal, have found themselves stuck at the airport for 6 hours.

The T20 World Cup has been a logistical mess, much of which has been the ICC’s fault. From scheduling Sri Lanka to play at four different venues, having games played at 10:30 AM to ensure Indian audiences tune in, and setting ticket prices too high, there have been many missteps from the board. Unfortunately, the ICC has another mess to sort out. However, this time, they aren’t to blame.

Having reached its maiden ICC Final, the South African cricket team was on a high. That happiness after making the T20 World Cup Final has turned into disappointment for the Proteas. Looking to make it to Barbados to prepare for their title contention, the South African team and ICC officials have been left stranded.

South Africa suffer 6-hour delay

Scheduled to land at the Grantley Adams airport in Barbados, players and their families, along with commentators and match officials, have been stuck at the Trinidad airport. Apparently, a small plane crashed at the Barbados airport, following which the authorities have closed it down until their inspection comes to an end.

Having already boarded the plane in Trinidad, it was learned that they couldn’t land in Barbados. The players then had to wait in the terminal and were announced that the next flight was scheduled six hours later.

Luckily, no one was harmed in the crash. “It appeared that the landing gear of the private aircraft did not deploy, but it is currently on the runway at GAIA [Grantley Adams International Airport] safely,” Sharleen Brown, Corporate Communication Specialist with GAIA, said in a statement.
