The Big Cricket League 2024 has reached to its final stage, with two finalists being decided. On Saturday, the semifinals had two exciting matches at Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Vesu, Surat. Irfan Pathan’s quick fifty for Mumbai Marines (MM) and Suresh Raina’s explosive knock of 84 runs off 37 balls helped Southern Spartans (SS) win their respective games. The two teams will play for the BCL season 1 trophy tomorrow (21st December) at the same venue.

In the first semifinal, Mumbai Marines narrowly defeated MP Tigers by 15 runs in a close match. Batting first, the Marines scored 172/7 in their 20 overs, with Irfan Pathan hitting a quick 54 runs off 31 balls and Manpreet Gony contributing 33 runs off 17 balls. Despite good bowling from MP Tigers’ Sandeep Kumar (3/30) and Dilshan Munaweera (1/24), the Marines managed to keep a steady run rate with timely partnerships.

In reply, MP Tigers couldn’t reach the target and finished at 157/9. Saket Sharma’s fast 34 runs off 11 balls and Naman Ojha’s solid 36 off 23 provided hope, but their middle order couldn’t deliver. Shivam Kumar excelled with both bat and ball, taking two key wickets and winning the Player of the Match award. Manan Sharma also contributed greatly with 2/23.

The second semifinal was a high-scoring thriller where Southern Spartans chased a huge 219-run target set by Northern Challengers in 20 overs, winning by six wickets. While Shikhar Dhawan goes to the pavallion for duck, Samiullah Shinwari played a brilliant innings, scoring 95 off 49 balls, with support from Upul Tharanga’s 46 and Gurkeerat Singh Mann’s quick 43. Their total of 218/4 seemed tough to beat, but the Spartans had different plans.

Solomon Mire’s blistering knock of 110 off just 38 balls set the tone for a dominating performance by team SS, as they chased down 222/4 in just 16.2 overs. Mire’s innings featured 14 sixes and 4 fours, with a strike rate of 289.47. His ability to target every bowler and find gaps at will left the opposition helpless.

Phil Mustard provided a fiery start with a 19-ball 44, complementing Mire with a quick partnership of 63 runs for the first wicket. Suresh Raina added stability with a 25-run contribution off 18 balls before falling to Gurkeerat Singh Mann. Aman Khan chipped in with a quick-fire 19 off 10 balls to ensure the chase was wrapped up with ease. The bowling lineup had no answers to the relentless assault, with none of the bowlers managing an economy below seven.
