NEW DELHI: The
Supreme Court
has temporarily halted the experimental opening of a road near the residence of Punjab chief minister
Bhagwant Mann
in Chandigarh.
Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta observed that the road, which has been closed since the 1980s due to security concerns, has been opposed by both the central and Punjab governments.
The court has issued a notice to the administration of Chandigarh, seeking their response by September 2, in response to a plea filed by the Punjab government.
The bench acknowledged that the road was initially closed during the peak of terrorism in Punjab in the 1980s.
Previously, on April 22, the Punjab and Haryana high court had ordered the opening of the 500-metre road, which connects Sukhna Lake to Nayagaon in Chandigarh, on a trial basis starting from May 1.
The high court had also instructed the Chandigarh police to engage traffic experts to develop a traffic management plan for the road, which was to be open from 7 am to 7 pm on working days.
The closure of the road has forced people traveling between Nayagaon and Sukhna Lake to take lengthy detours through neighboring sectors of the city.
