Sujoy reflected on the challenges he faced while trying to pitch the script of ‘Kahaani’ after the failure of ‘Aladin’. He mentioned that many people rejected the script, dismissing it as nonsensical, with one person even remarking, ‘A pregnant lady is running around in the streets of Kolkata, and nothing is happening.’ Ghosh revealed that the failure of ‘Aladin’ was particularly hard on him, as he had dedicated four years to the project, yet only a handful of people—mostly his family—watched it. He acknowledged that in the film industry, success is the ultimate measure of a movie’s quality, and if a film fails, one must accept it, learn from it, and move forward.
He expressed that Mr Bachchan was his greatest source of support during those difficult times. Despite ‘Aladin”s failure, Bachchan stood by him. Ghosh recalled how Bachchan had agreed to star in ‘Aladin’ without hesitation, and when the film didn’t succeed, Bachchan reassured him by saying, ‘You make whatever you want to, I am with you.’ This unwavering support from the legendary actor meant a lot to Ghosh and gave him the confidence to move forward.
Sujoy explained that Bachchan’s influence is deeply woven into ‘Kahaani’. Bachchan contributed significantly, from his song to his voiceover, making his presence felt throughout the film. Ghosh humorously remarked, ‘They say that when God is busy, he sends someone. God must have been busy, and sir (Amitabh Bachchan) showed up.’ The director later worked with Bachchan again on the film ‘
