Condemning the bus fare hike and demanding its immediate withdrawal, members of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI- Communist) held a demonstration in Dharwad on Saturday. The protesters gathered before the old bus station in Dharwad and raised slogans strongly condemning the hike.

Addressing the protesters, member of the district committee of SUCI-C Gangadhar Badiger said that at a time when the people of the State were burdened by steep hikes in prices of food grains and fuel, hiking the bus fares by 15% would be like rubbing salt on the wounds of the common man. SUCI-C would urge the State government to immediately withdraw the hike in the interest of common people, he said.

Mr. Badiger further urged the State government to immediately release pending amount towards the ‘Shakti’ scheme to public transport corporations immediately. It should put a curb on the menace of corruption and unnecessary expenditure in transport corporations, he said.

SUCI-C would also urge the Union government to release the rightful allocation to the State, which would help in the State government in meeting the revenue deficit of the transport corporations, he said.

Leading the agitation, Deepa Dharwad said that if the government failed to withdraw the bus fare hike, then people would be forced to launch a united fight against the government.

Madhulata Goudar, Sharanu Gonawar, Ranajit Dhoopad, Bhavanishankar Goudar and others of SUCI-C were present.
