Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has said that the critics who targeted him for naming Rohit Sharma as captain have now gone silent since the latter led India to their first-ever T20 World Cup win since 2007.

Speaking to Bangla newspaper AajKaal, Ganguly didn’t hold back in taking the attack to the detractors behind his decision to name Sharma as the successor of Virat Kohli, who stepped down from the T20 captaincy after the 2021 World Cup in UAE.

“I was criticised when I handed over the captaincy to Rohit. And now that we’ve won a trophy under his captaincy, no one is abusing me. Everyone has forgotten that I made him the captain,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly was the BCCI chief when Kohli announced his decision to step down from the captaincy in the shortest format, swiftly followed by stepping down from the role across all formats.

Rohit, who had captained India before in the T20 format, took over the role in November 2021.

Festive offer

In his first assignment as captain, India failed to go all the way in the T20 World Cup in Australia a couple years ago. Rohit was also the captain as India made it to the summit clash of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year – but Australia would best India on both occasions.

Leading the team to the T20 World title, Rohit became the first captain in the world to register 50 wins in the T20 format. Under Rohit’s captaincy, India have won 50 off the 62 matches they’ve played.
