After a four-hour debate, the Haryana Vidhan Sabha rejected by 54 votes to 28 the Opposition’s motion of no-confidence against the Bhajan Lal government. Though the Opposition insisted that the motion should be taken up when the non-officials day’s business was dispensed, the CM wanted it to be  voted immediately after question hour, saying he would not sign files before his government won the confidence of the House.

NTR’s Appeal

Former chief minister N T Rama Rao asked Andhra Pradesh Governor Shankar Daval Sharma to evince “personal interest and bestow care” in ensuring safety to legislators supporting him and take adequate steps to conduct the state assembly in a “disciplined manner”. He also desired that the House should first consider “assessing the strength of myself and my brother N Bhaskara Rao”.

Bhandari Takes Over

Romesh Bhandari, Secretary West Asia, who negotiated the return of the hijackers in Dubai, will be the new Foreign Secretary. He will take over from Maharajkrishna Rasgotra in January. Rasgotra’s term has been extended till January end to enable him to continue heading the foreign office till the Lok Sabha elections. Rasgotra is likely to be given a key diplomatic assignment after his retirement.

More Demand For TVs

The demand for television sets (both colour and black-and-white) in recent days has risen sharply to far outstrip supply, thanks to the Los Angeles Olympics and the mushrooming TV relay transmitters in the country. Consequently, black-and-white (B&W) sets, the prices of which had declined sharply not so long ago owing to an appreciable drop in demand, are once again in great demand.
