Avtar Singh, advisor to the outlawed All-India Sikh Students Federation and a close associate of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, has allegedly confessed to having visited Pakistan several times recently and receiving training in espionage and sabotage there. He is also reported to have said that Bhindranwale’s nephew was among several others being trained in such activities in Pakistan.

No Floor Test

Contrary to the expectations of the public and protestations by the deposed chief minister N T Rama Rao, the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly is not going to take up the vote-of-confidence motion when it meets. It will adjourn after adopting a condolence motion on the death of E Vasudeva Rao, Telugu Desam MLA, representing Visakhapatnam.

Curfew in MP

A three-day curfew was clamped on Sendhwa town in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh when four persons were killed and 35 injured in a communal riot and subsequent police firing. The injured include 23 policemen. One person was killed on the spot and two succumbed to bullet injuries in the hospital. Nine others were admitted to the government hospital. Official reports reaching here described the situation as “tense but under control”.

Zubin Mehta On TV

Delhi Doordarshan will telecast live the concert of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to be conducted by Zubin Mehta in New Delhi. Doordarshan sources said that the telecast will be from 7 pm to 8 pm. The sources said Doordarshan had made “all possible arrangements” for the telecast, though it has little experience in covering concerts by symphony orchestras.
