The district unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists on Tuesday took out a protest march to the office of the District Police Chief (Kochi City) against the alleged Crime Branch directive to the journalist of a Malayalam daily to produce his mobile phone in connection with a report that he had published in the newspaper.

The march, which started from near the Press Club, was stopped by the police using barricades in front of St. Teresa’s College. Senior journalist and former MP Sebastian Paul inaugurated the protest meet. He accused the police of pressuring the reporter to violate the basic tenet of journalism that the source of information should not be revealed. He dubbed the police action as “anti-democratic” and “encroachment on media freedom.”

Ernakulam Press Club president R. Gopakumar presided and secretary M. Shajil Kumar proposed vote of thanks.
