An update on ANI, the

Mumbai Police

confirmed, that Thapan “has been declared dead by doctors at the hospital.”

According to reports, the incident took place at around 11 am. Indian Express quoted a police official who said the incident took place in the bathroom of the police lock-up on the first floor.
He allegedly went to the bathroom where he took his life, while the other two accused were taken to record their statements.
Sources indicated that Thapan was being held in the lock-up of the Crime Branch when he made the attempt to end his life. According to sources, he was critical when he was rushed to the hospital. However, sources say, “How he attempted to kill himself is still not clear.”

Thapan’s arrest by the Mumbai Crime Branch, along with another accused,

Sonu Subhash Chander

, on April 25, marked a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the firing incident that occurred outside Khan’s residence on April 14.
News of his attempted suicide comes just days after the Mumbai Police slapped him and the other accused – Vicky Gupta and Sagal Pal – with the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) besides the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.

He was also sent to police custody till May 8, along with Gupta and Pal, as the investigators reportedly wanted to unravel the entire conspiracy behind the shooting and find out other possible ‘anti-national’ terror links.

The fourth accused, Sonu Chander Bishnoi (37), was remanded to judicial custody on health grounds.
