Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad brought up his second Indian Premier League (IPL) century in the match against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.
Gaikwad took 56 balls to reach his ton in an innings peppered with 11 fours and 3 sixes. On the other end, Shivam Dube gave his captain ample support as CSK raced towards a formidable target.
Gaikwad was announced as CSK’s captain for this IPL season after MS Dhoni stepped aside.
Talking about that, Gaikwad had revealed how he was shadow captaining CSK right through the title winning campaign in 2023, a year after MS Dhoni told him to be ready for the role. And having taken the hot seat, Gaikwad had said he wants “keep the CSK culture intact” as it has given them five titles, including three in the last six years.
“I remember in 2022 was when he told me that, ‘you know, probably not next year but after that you might get a chance to lead, so be ready for it’. So obviously after that, I was always preparing for it. It (the captaincy) didn’t come as news to me or was I bit surprised or shocked,” Gaikwad had said a few weeks back.
Earlier on Tuesday, Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bowl against Chennai Super Kings.
Rahul cited dew as the reason behind his call to chase against CSK.
The Chennai side made one change to their eleven, bringing in Daryll Mitchell for fellow Kiwi Rachin Ravindra, who has been out of form.
LSG made no changes to their eleven from the last match.
