In 24 Test innings so far, Rohit Sharma has made 607 runs at an average of just 26.39, which is the lowest-ever for him in a calendar year (min 350 runs scored).
As far as his batting is concerned, it seems nothing is going right at the moment for Rohit Sharma. The Indian skipper has had a horrible form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), and now the Hitman is having nightmares even during net sessions.
Watch: Rohit Sharma gets beaten by Padikkal, the bowler
In a video that has been making the rounds on the internet, Rohit Sharma was seen getting all ends up against an innoucous Devdutt Padikkal’s off-spin bowling. Padikkal, who has never taken a single wicket in competitive cricket, managed to beat Rohit Sharma, who got stuck on the backfoot. While the ball kept quite low against the Indian captain, he was seemingly got out LBW against Padikkal. Notably, the southpaw was the one who replaced Rohit when he missed the first India vs Australia Test in Perth due to paternity leave.
Rohit Sharma’s struggling Test form a major concern!
While India are still very well in the BGT series and chances for WTC qualification still remain intact, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aren’t the reasons for that. While Kohli did hit a century in Perth, Rohit has looked out of sorts ever since he has entered Down Under. Moving back to the middle-order spot, Rohit hasn’t looked comfortable. Rohit Sharma’s return to the middle order after six years has been a textbook case of bad timing. Scores of 3, 6, and 10 in the first three innings of the series don’t just reflect a bad patch—they scream that the experiment has failed.
The numbers don’t lie. Rohit Sharma has amassed only 153 runs in 13 innings in the latter half of 2024. For a player of his caliber, these stats are shockingly subpar. His struggles began in the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and have only worsened on the bouncy tracks Down Under.
Now, with just two Tests remaining, it is high time for Rohit to step up. His batting form is taking a hit on his captaincy as well and now India cannot afford to let this series slip. Otherwise, questions would be flaming in left, right and center.
