Retirement age of teachers drawing UGC pay scales increased to 65 years

The government has enhanced the retirement age of teachers working in the State Universities under the administrative control of Higher Education Department and drawing UGC pay scales, from 60 years to 65 years.

The orders would come into effect from January 28, 2025, and would benefit the professors who are set to retire at 60 years of age. The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) has recommended the enhancement of the superannuation age from 60 years to 65 years stating that there was an acute shortage of teachers in the varsities and their absence would hit research work also the rankings of the University in the NAAC, NBA, NRIF, National and International Accreditations and Rankings.

The TGCHE Chairman Balakista Reddy said the last recruitment was taken up in 2013 and since then many teachers have retired hitting the quality of teaching and also research work. He said to retain the senior faculty and their expertise it was necessary to enhance their retirement age.

Prof. Balakista Reddy also clarified that 18 states have already implemented the University Grants Committee (UGC) suggestion in this regard and enhanced the retirement age. It will not impact the new recruitments as these are existing posts and only their service is extended. Sources said about 200 professors, who are scheduled to retire in the next five years, would benefit from this decision.
