Claiming that liquor is being sold illegally round the clock at a rented house near the Tasmac shop at Gandhi Nagar in Kanirowther Lake area, over 50 residents staged a protest outside the house on Thursday.

Residents said they were facing difficulties as tippers frequently squatted on the road after consuming liquor, which was available 24 hours a day. They said motorists, residents and pedestrians feared crossing  the street during the night. The police seized liquor bottles from the house. The residents also called for relocation of the Tasmac shop, citing an increase in criminal activities in the area.

Tahsildar Muthukrishnan, Tasmac Deputy Manager Jayakumar, and police officials held talks with the protestors and assured them that steps would be taken to relocate the shop at the earliest. Following this, the protest was withdrawn.
