Using a large-bore Pulmonary Thrombectomy device developed by US-based Inari Medical, doctors at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad here helped save the life of a 20-year-old from Karimnagar, Telangana. The doctors removed large chunks of hard clots from left pulmonary artery leading to immediate restoration of blood flow to the lungs.

Doctors from multiple disciplines including interventional cardiologist C. Raghu, interventional pulmonologist Hari Kishan, cardio-thoracic anaesthetist Vikram Naidu and cardiac intensivist Hemalatha teamed up to treat the patient with the Inari MT system.

The doctors treated the 20-year-old who had fresh clots over pre-existing sticky and hard clots in the pulmonary arteries. This intervention prevented long-term lung damage. The blood loss during the procedure was limited to just 30 ml and the patient remained stable during and after the procedure, informed doctors. The patient was discharged five days after the procedure.

“Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is like heart attack or brain stroke where a blood clot that typically originates from the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, blocking a pulmonary artery or one of its branches. This is the third most common life-threatening cardiovascular problem after heart attack and brain stroke,” said Yashoda Hospitals group director Pavan Gorukanti. The minimally invasive surgical procedure costs ₹12 lakh, informed hospital officials.
