Prithvi Shaw, who was excluded from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad a few weeks back, was handed a new lease of life when he made it into the state’s 28 probables for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The 25-year-old, who has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I for India was dropped from the Mumbai squad for their away Ranji Trophy clash against Tripura owing to fitness and disciplinary matters.
Shaw was asked by selectors to follow two weeks of a fitness programme prepared by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) trainers after the team management informed MCA that Shaw’s body contained 35 percent fat and he needed rigorous training before he gets back into the side.
“He has been dropped, and needs to go back to training and shed some body weight to be considered for selection,” an MCA official had said.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer also made the Mumbai list for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy probables after impressing with the bat scoring 142 and 233 in his last two outings in Ranji Trophy.
Among those included are comeback man Siddhesh Lad, who made 169 in his last outing and all-rounder Shams Mulani, who ended his barren run with the ball to take 6/115 and 5/71 in Mumbai’s massive win against Odisha.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be held from November 23 to December 5 and will divide the Ranji Trophy into two halves along with the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy this season.
The league stage will take place from November 23 to December 5 while the knockouts will commence from December 9-15.
