PM On US-Pak
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi expressed concern over the supply of American arms to Pakistan and said India would meet the threat by stepping up indigenous production and through imports. Mrs Gandhi said “India is more worried now because of the change in their [Pakistan] attitude. Their role in the Punjab problem has been too evident.”
Tihar Cover-up
The police investigating the escape of two prisoners from Tihar jail last week are reported to have encountered attempts by the jail administration to conceal some facts relating to the prisoners’ escape. Some senior officials of the jail are also involved in the cover-up bid. According to police sources, the escape could not have taken place in the morning. Attempts to re-enact the escape within the stated period of 45 minutes proved futile.
Charan On Congress I
Charan Singh, president of the newly-formed Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party, denied reports of a possible understanding between his party and the Congress-I. He said, “In no circumstances can there be any understanding between the Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party and the Congress, which are polls apart. Any report to the contrary… [are] intended to divide the Opposition.”
Akali Dal Disbanding
The five Sikh head priests are likely to disband all Sikh political organisations including various factions of the Akali Dal and take over command of the Sikh “panth”, sources close to the priests said. The organisations likely to be affected would be the Akali Dal (L), Akali Dal (Talwandi) Akali Dal (Tara Singh), other Akali Dal groups and
youth wings.
