The Janata Party-led United Front of opposition parties will contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections under a common symbol and joint programme. This was decided at an “informal” meeting of the UF co-ordination committee. The front will meet on October 25 to finalise its joint programme and spell out its economic, foreign affairs and other policies.

IAS vs UP PCS

Four senior officers of the UP Provincial Civil Service have refused promotion to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service. This has taken by surprise many officers who have been witnessing the cold war between the IAS and the UP PCS with bated breath. The contention of the PCS officers is that they had been considered for promotion to the IAS after about 26 years of service and their present emoluments in the parent service were more than what they would’ve received in the IAS.

Sikh Activists Held

Ten activists of the banned All-India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) have been arrested by security forces for causing two major breaches in the Bhakra Main Line (BML) canal in June and July this year, besides involvement in a number of other crimes. However, two of their associates managed to escape, official sources said in Chandigarh. All of them have been arrested and a number of arms and ammunition recovered from them.

77 Indian Fishers Freed

Sri Lanka has released 77 of the 94 Indian fishermen arrested by naval patrols last week. Sources said that 17 fishermen in custody will be tried on October 29 while those released would be repatriated to India soon. The Indian High Commissioner’s office has sought the assistance of the Lankan Foreign Ministry for the release of the remaining fishermen.
