India-US Relations

Relations between India and the United States appeared to be touching a new low over Washington’s policy on Pakistan. Harry Barnes, American Ambassador in Delhi was summoned by Foreign Secretary Maharajkrishna Rasgotra and plainly told that India detested the kind of statement his counterpart in Pakistan had made last week projecting India as a potential aggressor.

4 Killed In Tripura

Violence in Tripura left four dead and 20 injured, some of them seriously, and tension mounted in many pockets of the state following the 24-hour bandh call given by underground rebels belonging to the Tribal National Volunteers (TNV). Guns and choppers were used and there were reports of arson from some places. Only medical institutions were exempted from the bandh, which was called to observe Black Day.

Rajiv Gandhi Steps Up

The five-day Congress-I pre-election exercise gave the unmistakable impression among state leaders that Rajiv Gandhi has been given full charge of ticket distribution for the forthcoming elections. About 450 senior leaders, including Y B Chavan, were made to wait for hours before being interviewed by Mr Gandhi. The interviews, however, in the ultimate analysis, seem to have failed to enthuse the rank and file.

Pak Border Sealed

The government is believed to have sealed the border with Pakistan for five days and no rail or road traffic will be permitted during this period. The decision seems to have been taken by the External Affairs Ministry to ensure that nobody misuses travel documents these days on the pretext of watching the cricket match being played in Pakistan. The first cricket match between India and Pakistan is scheduled to take place in Lahore.
