Suburban Central Railway train proved a coffin for 25 hapless commuters during peak hours on November 22 when two of its coaches derailed and capsized at the Byculla station. At least 45 commuters were admitted to various city hospitals with severe injuries, and a large number of others sustained minor injuries.

AP Assembly Dissolved

THE 23-MONTH-OLD Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly has been dissolved with immediate effect ending the suspense about the future of the Lower House. The Governor, Shankar Dayal Sharma, accepted a resolution adopted at an emergency meeting of the state Cabinet on November 22 and asked N T Rama Rao to be the care-taker Chief Minister.

Sri Lanka Curfew

THE SRI LANKA government clamped a 48-hour nationwide curfew at midnight on November 21 as a precautionary measure, following incidents of arson and violence in Colombo and other parts of the country. The curfew was imposed following the killing of more than 30 policemen, a majority of them Sinhalese, by Tamil militants in an attack on Chavakachcheri police station in the northern province on November 20. Sources said the bodies of 14 policemen were being sent to their native places for funerals.

Investigation Delay

POLICE FAIL TO investigate cases of crime in East Delhi, which saw the worst of the recent carnage. Over 1,000 persons were killed, 50,000 were victims of rioting and arson. To investigate all this, the police have registered 80 cases. What was supposed to be a case for every complaint, now there is a case for over 600 complaints. Not a single police officer has come to make inquiries from the victims.
