Faiz Ahmed Faiz, a literary giant who became a legend in Urdu poetry, died in Lahore following a cardiac arrest. He was 73. Faiz had a severe attack of asthma, an ailment he had been suffering for years, and was rushed to Lahore hospital. In his lifetime, Faiz had published eight collections of poems. In 1962, he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize, the first Asian poet to receive the honour.
PM On Pakistan
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi warned the Indian Air Force commanders about the nature of the threat from Pakistan. He told them at their bi-annual conference that there was a danger that the weapons Pakistan was acquiring ostensibly for use in Afghanistan might be redirected against India. US reports about Pakistan’s developing nuclear device were also discussed as Mr Gandhi said that it was “again a matter of great concern to our country.”
Separatists Kill 40
Tamil separatist guerrillas blew up a police station in a “Lebanon-style” truck bomb attack in northern Sri Lanka, killing at least 40 policemen, informed sources said in Colombo. The attack was launched with a truckload of explosives driven into a two-storey police station by separatist guerillas. As army convoys rushed to the scene, several land mines blew up on the road, impeding their travel.

The elusive agreement on electoral adjustments for 85 seats in Uttar Pradesh continues to block an overall Opposition bid to field common candidates against the Congress-I in next month’s Lok Sabha elections. A final effort will be made today with N Rama Rao and P Upendra expected to meet representatives of the BJP, Janata and DMKP.
