Farewell, Mrs Gandhi
Nothing stopped people from making their way to Teen Murti House to pay their last respects to Indira Gandhi — not the rioting, nor the lack of public transport, nor their age, nor a physical handicap, nor even the chill that descended on the capital. From the young to the old, from the healthy to the infirm and handicapped, they were all there streaming in from early in the morning, waiting patiently in a queue that extended for well over a mile, to pay their last respects to the assassinated leader.
Appeal For Unity
The Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and 15 Opposition leaders made a joint appeal to the people to end the “madness” of violence unleashed following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Making an earnest appeal to restore sanity and harmony, the government and Opposition leaders said the “world’s eyes are on India. India must come out of this test with credit.”
