Bumrah would want redemption for the unfortunate no-ball in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy Final against Pakistan and would give his all to be fit for the event starting February 19.
There isn’t any update regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s injury status. No one really knows whether he’ll be fit for the ICC Champions Trophy. Earlier today, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) updated the India cricket team’s squad for the England ODI series, and Bumrah, who was initially expected to play the last match, has been removed from the squad.
Jasprit Bumrah needed for India to win ICC Champions Trophy, says Ponting
This would suggest that his recovery isn’t going as expected. How much will Team India suffer from his absence? He didn’t play in the 2022 and 2021 T20 World Cups, which resulted in losses for Team India. When he played in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024, the Men in Blue reached the final and won the event.
Ricky Ponting, a 2-time ICC Champions Trophy winner himself (2006 and 2009), thinks that if Bumrah isn’t available, Team India’s chance of winning will go down substantially.
“Bumrah not fit will reduce India’s chances (of winning the Champions Trophy) by 30%, literally by 30-35%. With a fully fit Bumrah playing, you are guaranteed of those death overs. It would’ve been a different ball game altogether,” Ponting said on the ICC Review.

Bumrah literally carried Team India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and without him, Ponting doesn’t see them winning. If Mohammed Shami isn’t fit, then the reigning T20 World Cup champions are doomed.
“My biggest concern about India when they came for Australia in the Test series was Bumrah not having Shami there as a backup and him having to burden most of the load. And that’s probably what happened and might even have something to do with why he (Bumrah) got hurt. He probably ended up having to bowl a bit more in that series with Shami not being there. So look, if Shami’s fit, that’s a positive,” he added.
