Here’s how the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 table would look if India lose the 4th IND vs AUS BGT Boxing Day Test.
India and Australia are in the middle of a gripping five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series Down Under. After a strong start by India in the first Test, Australia bounced back to win the second, leaving the series level at 1-1. India fought again to enforce a draw at the Gabba. The action has now moved to the MCG for the iconic Boxing Day Test, where the hosts have once again gained an upper hand and hold a massive advantage. But what if India loses this game? How would it affect the WTC points table 2023-25? Let us look at the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 table if Rohit Sharma goes on to lose this Test in Melbourne.
WTC points table if India lose IND vs AUS 4th BGT Test
Rank | Team | Played | Won | Draw | Lost | Penalties | Points | % Points |
1 | South Africa | 10 | 6 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 76 | 63.33 |
2 | Australia | 16 | 11 | 2 | 4 | -10 | 118 | 61.46 |
3 | India | 18 | 9 | 2 | 7 | -2 | 114 | 52.78 |
4 | New Zealand | 14 | 7 | 0 | 7 | -3 | 81 | 48.21 |
5 | Sri Lanka | 11 | 5 | 0 | 6 | 0 | 60 | 45.45 |
6 | England | 22 | 11 | 1 | 10 | -22 | 114 | 43.18 |
7 | Pakistan | 10 | 4 | 0 | 6 | -8 | 40 | 33.33 |
8 | Bangladesh | 12 | 4 | 0 | 8 | -3 | 45 | 31.25 |
9 | West Indies | 11 | 2 | 2 | 7 | 0 | 32 | 24.24 |
WTC points table: India to remain at 3rd
After opting to bat first, Australian top-order completely tormented the Indian bowling lineup. Jasprit Bumrah once again looked like a one-man army. Sam Konstas hit a trailblazing fifty on debut before Steve Smith took charge and hit a stupendous 140. After putting 474 on the board, Australia had India on the floor. A runout for Yashasvi Jaiswal led everything downhill. At stumps on Day 2, India still trail by 310 runs with just 5 wickets remaining.
This series is crucial for both teams as they aim to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. South Africa currently leads the WTC standings and looks likely to qualify with two home Tests against Pakistan remaining. Australia is second with 58.89 percentage points, while India is third with 55.88 percentage points. However, if India go on to lose the Boxing Day Test, things will be almost unavoidable for them. They would slip to just 52.78 points, while Australia would have 61.46.
How can India qualify for WTC Final?
For India to qualify directly, they must win the series by a 4-1 or 3-1 margin. But if India lose the Melbourne Test, that can’t happen. If Rohit Sharma ends up with a defeat, the last Sydney Test becomes paramount. They have to win the 5th IND vs AUS Test to remain in contention. However, external help would be crucial as well, such as a drawn Test between Australia and Sri Lanka from their 2-game Test series in the subcontinent.
A 2-2 series draw at BGT would complicate matters for India. They would require Sri Lanka to win their series against Australia. Even if Australia win a single match against Sri Lanka, they would qualify. If Australia and Sri Lanka end with poor PCT and drop points for poor over rate, that is the only possibility for Team India to qualify.
