Navdeep Singh awarded gold after disqualification of Iranian athlete at Paris Paralympics

Navdeep Singh won his first Paralympic medal, securing silver in the Men’s Javelin Throw F41 event at the Paris Paralympics,

India’s javelin thrower, Navdeep Singh, wins a historic gold medal for India in the Men’s Javelin Throw F41 event at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. The event took place at Stade de France on Saturday. The athlete from Haryana achieved the best throw of 47.32m.

He had to settle for silver, but now, Iranian athlete Beit Sayah Sadegh has been disqualified, resulting in the silver medal being upgraded to gold. This is the first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Javelin F41 category.

Why did the Iranian disqualified?

The Iranian athlete was disqualified for violating rule 8.1 of the International Paralympic Committee’s code of conduct, which addresses “unsporting or improper conduct”. He received two yellow cards, resulting his disqualification with the red card.

Rule 8.1 says, “World Para Athletics (WPA) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and conduct in the sport of Para athletics. All participants in the sport, including athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators, have a responsibility to uphold these standards and ensure that the sport is conducted in a fair, honest, and transparent manner.”

First Paralympic medal for Navdeep Singh

This is Navdeep Singh’s first-ever Paralympic medal. Earlier, in the Tokyo Paralympics, he missed a medal by coming fourth in the javelin throw event. In his career, he won gold at the Asian Youth Para Games and the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in 2021.

This is India’s 29th medal at the Paris Paralympics. India has now secured 7 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals at the event. In the Tokyo Paralympics, India won 19 medals, but this time, they made history by winning more than 25 medals.
