A national geospatial knowledge-based land survey of urban habitations (NAKSHA), a pilot programme to modernise urban land records, was launched in Thanjavur Corporation and Ariyalur municipal limits on Tuesday.
The programme is being taken up under the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme of the Department of Land Resources of the Union Ministry of Rural Development. The programme aims at ensuring that the urban land records were accurate and up-to-date, empowering urban citizens and enabling better urban planning.
The one-year pilot programme will be implemented in more than 150 cities across the country. Field survey and “ground truthing” will be carried out by State governments. Based on the outcome of the pilot project, the programme would be extended to all cities and towns nationwide.
The pilot project was inaugurated in Thanjavur by Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam. Durai Chandrasekaran and T.K.G. Neelamegam, MLAs, and Mayor Sun. Ramanathan, Mayor, were present. In Ariyalur, Collector P.Rathinasamy inaugurated the exercise.
Under the programme, drones would be deployed to carry out geospatial mapping and create accurate property records. The data would be integrated with the property tax records of the urban local bodies. Advanced land survey devices would be used to create the maps.
Property owners would be able to file objections, if any, to the field maps generated. After considering the same, the final land records would be released. Once the process is completed, owners would be provided with integrated property records, according to a press release.
