Mirabai Chanu, India’s lone weightlifter at Paris Olympics to have a support staff of four

A 117-member Indian contingent is all set to take part in the Paris Olympics in 2024. Along with the 117 athletes, a total of 140 members of support staff will travel as well. 

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and equestrian rider Anush Agarwalla are India’s sole representatives in their respective sports. While the focus should be on these athletes’ performances, the size of their support staff has drawn attention.

A team of nine for two athletes

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, while requiring less specialised support, will still travel with four people, and three coaches, including a national coach, and a physiotherapist.

Anush Agarwalla, competing in equestrian, will be accompanied by a surprisingly large support staff of five officials. This includes a coach, a groom, a veterinarian, and two personal coaches. 

Budget breakdown 

According to the Times of India, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has allocated a significant budget for the Paris Games. Of the estimated Rs 33 crore, a substantial Rs 18.90 crore will be spent on delegates and IOA officials, raising concerns about spending priorities. Along with this, athletes will receive a cash grant of Rs 2 lakh each, and coaching staff will get Rs 1 lakh each.
