The Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and the new leader of the Soviet Communist Party, Mikhail Gorbachev, had talks at the Kremlin and expressed their “firm desire” to enlarge mutual cooperation in all fields. The two leaders also exchanged views on the current global situation. Gandhi told Gorbachev of India’s firm commitment to the ideals of peace and nuclear disarmament.
US Missiles For Pak
The United States intends to supply AIM-9L air-to-air missiles to Pakistan to be fitted on the F-16 combat aircraft already delivered to the country, US undersecretary of state for political affairs Michael H Armacost said at a press conference in Islamabad. “We recognise the pressures imposed on Pakistan by the Soviet occupation with 100,000 troops in Afghanistan,” he said.
CPI vs CPM

Angered by the CPM politburo charge, the CPI accused the CPM leadership of pursuing negative and disruptive tactics which have harmed not only the interests of the CPI and other left parties but of the CPM as well. The CPM statement had accused the CPI leadership of suffering from insensate electoral ambitions, which drove it to wreck all chances of left unity.
Sterilisation Ad
An ad on the front page praised “the dynamic leadership of Ch. Bhajan Lal, Chief Minister” for Haryana winning the National Family Welfare Award for two consecutive years. It added: “The Haryana government is determined to make family welfare a people’s movement and a wholly voluntary programme. Now, an acceptor of sterilisation gets Rs 150 as cash incentive instead of Rs 100 for vasectomy as well as tubectomy.”
