Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called on people from various fields, including academicians, to engage in meaningful discussions on the current ethnic situation in the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the Art and Culture building and an Open Gym at Manipur University, he emphasized the need for a dialogue with faculty members, teachers, researchers, and students to understand the root causes of the ethnic conflict in the region.

“Now is a time filled with struggles and challenges, but it is crucial that we remain focused on our goals,” Singh remarked, highlighting the importance of addressing the underlying issues through informed discussions.

The Chief Minister also stressed the role of educational institutions, such as universities, in clearing up confusion surrounding the conflict. He suggested that seminars or legal camps could be organized to raise awareness and educate people on the matter.

Singh highlighted the publication of the book Know Manipur, emphasizing the need to educate the people about the state’s roots and history. “Our society will progress when people feel a sense of belonging and ownership towards the land,” he said, stressing the importance of fostering a collective identity. “We have the talent, but we need to act with a sense of responsibility towards our land,” he added.

He also called for a disturbance-free environment in educational institutions, which would allow students and faculty to focus on their academic and professional responsibilities.

In his address, the Chief Minister acknowledged that the state had lost significant time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing ethnic violence. However, he reassured the public that despite these setbacks, the government had continued its developmental work.

At the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the construction of multi-storied government quarters at Langol Housing Complex in Imphal West, Singh noted that the government had made considerable progress in development since 2017, despite challenges. “While around two and a half years were lost due to COVID-19, and an additional two years due to ethnic unrest, the government has kept its focus on development while working towards resolving the situation,” he said.

Singh also elaborated on the need for vertical expansion to minimize land use, with an 8-storey building being constructed as part of the project. He highlighted similar construction at New Checkon, where 13 high-rise government quarters are underway. He appealed to the public to take care of nature and maintain cleanliness, urging contractors to ensure timely completion of the building.

The project is being funded by HUDCO, with a total cost of approximately Rs 65.60 crore, including the state share.
