NEW DELHI: Two major automakers,
Mahindra
& Mahindra (M&M) and
Tata Motors
received a record number of patent approvals for a broad range of product and process
innovations
in the previous financial year.
M&M secured 674 approvals, its highest-ever in a year with majority coming in from the Indian Patent office, while Tata Motors received 333
patents
during the 2023-24 fiscal year.
“We understand the importance of being future-ready; therefore, we have made significant R&D investments to ensure that we stay ahead of the curve in terms of technology and talent,” M&M ED & CEO (Auto & Farm Sectors) Rajesh Jejurikar said.
Mahindra has till now received a total of 1,185 patents covering a wide range of areas, including powertrain (ICE & EV), vehicle mechanical systems, electronics, manufacturing processes, electric tractors, and advanced engineering.
The automobile company is awaiting approval for 193 applications as of March 31, 2024. It has in total filed 2,212 patent applications to date.
Meanwhile, its rival Tata Motors also achieved its highest-ever grant of 333 patents in the last fiscal year, bringing its total number of granted patents to over 850.
It also set new records by filing 222 patents and 117 design applications in FY24. These filings cover a broad spectrum of product and process innovations, addressing key automotive trends such as connectivity, electrification, sustainability, and safety (CESS).
The patents also include various vehicle systems, including powertrain, suspension, brakes, and emission control.
Rajendra Petkar, president & chief technology officer of Tata Motors, said that the company continues to redefine automotive excellence with a record number of patents filed and granted.
