The Madrid Derby between Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid came to an abrupt halt after some hostile fans at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium threw objects at Thibaut Courtois.
What happened during the Madrid Derby?
The incident occurred in the 70th minute of the match, when a water bottle was thrown from the stands and struck Courtois in the head. The Belgian goalkeeper immediately fell to the ground, appearing to be in pain. Play was immediately stopped, and the referee spoke to both managers, Diego Simeone and Carlo Ancelotti, to assess the situation.
Shortly after, several Atletico players, including Koke and Simeone were seen leaving the pitch to address the supporters and attempt to calm them down. However, the hostile atmosphere persisted, and the game was ultimately suspended.
The home crowd went angry due to the fact that Athletico went down 0-1 after Eder Militao’s right-footer from inside the box bagged a crucial goal for Real Madrid. After a 10 minute break, Diego Simeone walked out to the field and brought back the two sides before trh referee blew the whistle to resume the play.
