LeBron James is playing his 22nd season in the NBA and is showing no signs of slowing down. He went from leading the star-studded Team USA to their fifth straight gold medal at the Olympics in Paris 2024, to trying to drag the under-par Los Angeles Lakers to their 64th NBA playoffs appearance.
The basketball legend turned 40 on December 30, but is still the fittest players in the world, thanks to his extensive workout regime and his diet. Rumour has it that he spends over a million dollars each year just to stay in fighting-fit shape.
LeBron James’ fitness secrets
An article on NBC Los Angeles last year had revealed LeBron James’ secrets.
The NBA star avoids artificial drinks, sugars, and fried foods. There is a lot of emphasis on consuming organic products throughout the year, which helps in keeping the body hydrated.
James had revealed some of his secrets in an interview for an UNITERRUPTED special show called Trophies. There LeBron James had said that he focusses on consuming lean meat like fish, and only consumes fruits and vegetables otherwise.
During the season, LeBron James focuses more on the consumption of carbohydrates than in the offseason, as players tend to burn a lot more calories in a 48-minute intense game.
The four-time NBA champion spends around 1.5 million dollars on his entire fitness regime, from the diet to the workout.
What does LeBron James’ breakfast look like?
To start his day off James leans more towards a protein-rich breakfast, which includes egg whites, smoked salmon, yogurt and berries with gluten-free pancakes. But if he is in a rush or feels like he wants to take it a little light, he leans towards a simple bagel and peanut butter.
What does LeBron James eat for Lunch and Dinner?
His main meals of the day include a protein heavy meal as well, which is paired with vegetables. On game days, he prefers to have chicken breast, some pasta or a vegetable salad.
What snacks does LeBron James prefer?
Just like a fitness enthusiast, LeBron James prefers to snack on fruits above all else. He feels like a day without having any fruit would be the same as skipping a workout.
But everyone is allowed cheat days, even the greatest of athletes. And LeBron James is not one to shy away from the same. He is often seen with a glass of wine while he is watching other teams play, or after dinner. He also enjoys some French toast with extra syrup and other desserts on his cheat days, which is preceded by some good pizza.
LeBron James’ workout routine
For every athlete, a well-planned-out workout routine is imperative to perform well in the long run. James makes sure to work out six days a week, which has three days of weight training, plyometric exercises and cardio.
But that is not the only thing that has kept him at the top of the game for all these years. He also uses advanced technology in hyperbaric and red light chambers as well as cryotherapy that helps in speedy recovery after an intense workout routine. The recovery also includes the hot tub to cold water plunge.
In another important factor for James’ fitness, his personal trainer Mike Mancias told Netflix: “We tried it all in 20 years. But the most important thing is what he gets for free, and that’s sleep”. James confirmed this by saying “Sleep is the best recovery you can have.”
