The Indian men’s team defeated Nepal 42-37 in the opening match of the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

Before the Group A clash in the men’s section, a glittering opening ceremony was attended by India’s Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and several other dignitaries. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P.T. Usha was also present.

“From kho kho’s origins in the rural hinterland to now being played on the global stage, I would like to congratulate the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) for its efforts in turning a dream into reality. I am confident that the Kho Kho World Cup will ignite the passion for India’s indigenous games,” Usha stated in her address.

India’s next match is against Brazil on Tuesday. In the women’s section, the host will kick off its campaign against South Korea in Group A.
