The Transport Department of Karnataka has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to January 31, 2025. This marks the sixth extension.

HSRP installation has been mandatory for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019.

The HSRP is a secure number plate designed to prevent misuse. It features non-reusable locks, making removal possible only by breaking them. Each plate comes with a unique 10-digit number linked to the vehicle’s chassis and engine details, which are stored in a central database.

A Transport Department official said that HSRP plates follow a uniform design and font, with a blue ‘chakra’ symbol on the left. Background colours vary based on vehicle type — white for private vehicles with black numbers and yellow for commercial vehicles. Additionally, the word ‘INDIA’ is hot-stamped on the plate for authenticity.

For cars, two plates are installed, one on the front and another on the rear, accompanied by a windshield sticker displaying the registration details and HSRP number. Two-wheelers, however, have a single engraved plate on the rear without any additional sticker.
