JIND: A Kanungo was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe from a retired army officer. The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) announced a rigorous imprisonment sentence of five years to Jasbir Singh, a local Kanungo, for accepting a bribe from a retired Army officer. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict, along with an additional one-year jail term for his default.
The victim, a retired Captain from the Army, had lodged a complaint against the accused, detailing the bribe demand. The victim, who resides in Gatauli village of Jind, explained that he had purchased agricultural land in his wife Kamla Devi’s name, covering 4 kanal 2 marla, in 2021. In May 2022, he applied to the Tehsildar of Julana for land demarcation.
On May 11, 2022, the Tehsildar of Julana set the government fee for the demarcation at Rs 3000 and appointed Jasbir Singh, the local Kanungo, for the task. The victim paid the fee and received the receipt. However, when he met Kanungo in his office, Jasbir Singh scheduled the demarcation for May 13, 2022, but failed to show up. He later rescheduled it for May 20, 2022, but again did not arrive.
On May 26, 2022, the Kanungo came to the victim’s field and demanded a bribe of Rs 5000, saying that the demarcation would only proceed on May 30, 2022, if the bribe was paid in addition to the government fee. When the victim refused, Jasbir Singh insisted that without the bribe, the demarcation would not take place. Even on May 30, 2022, the Kanungo did not show up, and when contacted, he claimed that he had a meeting with the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jind.
The victim alleged that he assured that he would conduct the demarcation on June 2, 2022, but again demanded the bribe. “I was unwilling to pay and filed a complaint. The

Following legal proceedings, the local court handed down the sentence, underscoring the seriousness of corruption on Tuesday.
