The security forces completed their task of flushing out terrorists from the Golden Temple complex. All active resistance had stopped from within and mopping up operations were on. The security forces had stormed the Golden Temple complex when the terrorists ignored appeals for surrender. Forty-eight troops and 250 terrorists were killed.

J&K Violence

Fidah Hussain, a jawan of the 8th Battalion of the Kashmir Armed Police, was crushed to death when some Sikh extremists ploughed a truck into the armed police force at the Nanak Nagar locality. Half a dozen other jawans were injured in the incident. One of them, Fazle Hussain, was in a serious condition. Several other police jawans were hit by the stones thrown from inside the Nanak Nagar gurudwara.

Gulf War Intensifies

Iranian artillery shelled four Iraqi towns, killing three civilians, while 13 Iranian troops died in fighting in the northern sector of the Gulf war front, an Iraqi military communique said. 26 Killed In Calcutta

At least 26 people were killed due to heavy rains which flooded the metropolis and its industrial neighbourhood. About 12 persons were killed and 31 injured due to house collapse and electrocution as life stood at a stand still for the second consecutive day, following heavy rainfall. In another major tragedy, 14 persons were run over and 18 injured by a speeding train near Howrah.
