Terrorists killed nine persons, including two jawans of the security forces, at different places in Punjab during the last 24 hours while curfew was further extended all over the state with relaxations for a few hours. A 24-hour curfew was reimposed in Chandigarh from 9am as a preventive measure following threats by people of a community to take out a procession in the city in violation of the prohibitory orders.
Curfew in Poonch
Indefinite curfew was clamped on the border town of Poonch following looting and arson by members of the banned All-India Sikh Students Federation. Armed forces have taken control of the town and troops are on patrol. Official reports said that the measures were taken when miscreants harassed shopkeepers and threatened to blow up shops. They also attempted to loot some banks, the reports said.
Review of Punjab issue
While security forces in Punjab are continuing their mopping up operations, the political leadership is busy assessing the situation and planning immediate steps to ensure that the Army action has no backlash either in Punjab or elsewhere in the country. The Political Affairs Committee of the Cabinet met with Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi chairing the meeting and reviewed the situation.
London economic meet
The London economic summit of seven Western nations ended with the participants patting themselves on the back for the global economic recovery, and asserting that this would help the Third World more than anything else. The summit declaration said that the global recovery was the result of the brave efforts of the summiteers to curb inflation. More of the same policies were needed to spread the benefits of recovery, especially to developing countries.
