Jasprit Bumrah on Sunday became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 Test wickets during the Boxing Day Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne.

After snapping four wickets in the first innings, Bumrah reached the landmark with his second wicket in Australia’s second innings on Day 4 of the Test. Bumrah dismissed Travis Head for 1 to mark his milestone 200th wicket in his 44th Test, joining contemporaries Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada, who also crossed the mark in 44 games.

Quickest Indian to 200 wickets

Bumrah nabbed his 200th Test wicket off only the 8484th legal delivery he has bowled in the format, making him the fastest Indian to the mark in terms of balls bowled, eclipsing Mohammed Shami who took his 200th wicket from his 9896th delivery. Overall, Bumrah ranks the fourth-quickest bowler to reach 200 scalps, behind Waqar Younis, Dale Steyn, and Kagiso Rabada.

Bumrah, who made his debut in January 2018, also became the first bowler to achieve 200 wickets with a sub-20 bowling average (19.56). No bowler has amassed more wickets at a better bowling average than Bumrah, with Rabada appearing the closest among active players. Among bowlers in the 200-club, Bumrah’s strike rate is only bettered by Rabada (39.42) and Steyn (42.38).

In terms of matches, only off-spinner R Ashwin (38 matches) has scaled 200 wickets quicker than Bumrah among Indian bowlers. With his first wicket of the innings, Bumrah also became only the third pacer after Cummins and Mitchell Starc to complete 150 Test wickets in the ICC World Test Championship since 2019. Only Ashwin has bagged (195) more WTC wickets than Bumrah (151*) among Indian bowlers across three cycles of the championship.
