Refugees In Assam

THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED to resume talks with the Assam agitation leaders who have been asked to revise proposals to solve the problem. The previous round of talks failed because the government did not agree with the demands of the All-Assam Students Union and the All-Assam Gana Sangram Parishad to disperse refugees who entered the state between 1961 and 1971.

Resetting Ties

BOTH PAKISTAN AND Sri Lanka, like other neighbours, are trying to find out the new government’s policy towards their governments. This is evident from the sudden departure of the Sri Lanka High Commissioner, Bernard P Tilakratna and the Pakistan ambassador, Humayun Khan. They have apparently gone home to give their governments their assessment of the new government’s policy.

US-Soviet Talks

SECRETARY OF STATE George Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko met for talks on new arms control negotiations. “There was no joviality but there also was no tension” said observers, who described the session as “very businesslike.” While the US aims to resume talks on reducing strategic long-range weapons and medium-range missiles, Gromyko said that talks must cover both offensive nuclear arms and space weapons.

Bhopal Victims’ Cases

K PARASARAN, ATTORNEY General of India, will visit the US to consult American lawyers on the maintainability of action and the jurisdiction of American courts concerning the Bhopal gas tragedy victims’ cases. Chief Minister Arjun Singh, the chief secretary and the law secretary of the Madhya Pradesh government agreed that victims should not be asked to pay any court fee.
