Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi set up a special Cabinet Committee to address the Punjab problem. Gandhi stated that “we have some ideas about Punjab” and that all efforts would be made to resolve the problem. During his electioneering, Gandhi emphasised that after Congress (I) was voted back to power, the new government’s priority would be to find a solution to the Punjab tangle.

No Decorum At IFFI

STARS AND LIGHTS dazzled, but decorum and discipline were abandoned at India’s 10th International Film Festival at Vigyan Bhavan. The film industry, which took charge of the inaugural ceremony, no doubt brought to the city the largest ever contingent but for all practical purposes it remained a Bombay affair with regional films given almost no representation. The way the two comperes — Dipti Naval and Raj Babbar — conducted the proceedings was not only casual but also shoddy.

Caretaker CM Hegde

THE UNCERTAINTY OVER the immediate governmental set-up in Karnataka, compounded by the dissolution of the state assembly, ended with Ramakrishna Hegde agreeing to head a caretaker ministry until the assembly elections are held. Hegde asserted that there was no reversal of his stand since he continued to be against heading a caretaker government.

Officers Transferred

SEVERAL ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES at the higher levels at the Centre as also in the Army are likely to be announced. These could involve the reposting of several secretaries as well as the promotion of some senior generals. A search is on for a Commerce Secretary in place of Abid Hussain, who has completed his service in the government but has been asked to stay on till a successor is found.
