A SENIOR DIPLOMAT from the French Embassy was deported from the country. He was named by the officials arrested as their link with the CIA, intelligence sources said. The diplomat was flown back by a special aircraft, accompanied by top intelligence officials. The aircraft took off from the technical area of Delhi Airport about 3 pm.
CPI Faces Crisis
A storm of sorts is blowing in the Communist Party of India, particularly about the leadership of the party’s general secretary, Mr C Rajaswara Rao, whose political line is being held responsible for the party’s miserable performance in the Lok Sabha election. This is evident from the available accounts of the proceedings of the central executive committee.
SGPC’s Demand
The 15-member executive committee of the SGPC demanded a restoration of firearms to the Golden Temple and SGPC authorities. Eighteen guns belonging to them were reported to have been confiscated by the Government authorities after the Army’s action. The committee alleged that if the government had not deprived the SGPC of its licenced arms, the assassination attempt on the Akal Takht chief could have been averted.
Delhi Summit
The six-nation summit on nuclear disarmament meeting in New Delhi is expected to pay particular attention to the new threat of the nuclear arms race spilling over to outer space. Sources indicated that the summit might consider a proposal to visit the capitals of the nuclear power countries to impress upon them the urgency of an immediate freeze on nuclear arms testing and production.
