Tea India 138 for 2 (Gill 37*, Pant 4*, Mehidy 1-38) trail Bangladesh 233 (Mominul 107*, Bumrah 3-50) by 95 runs

After two rainy, non-cricket days at Green Park, Kanpur sprung to life on sunny Monday with a speedy India breaking a few Test records. After picking up the last four Bangladesh wickets for just 28 runs inside 45 minutes after lunch, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal immediately gave a sense of the approach India wanted to take in the remainder of the Test that has seen two days lose to wet conditions. The approach saw India trail Bangladesh by just 95 with four sessions left in the Test.

Jaiswal hit a hat-trick of fours off the opening over of India’s innings off Hasan Mahmud, who picked up a five-for in Chennai. Rohit then brought out a version of his that we have become so attuned to seeing in white-ball cricket, thumping the first two balls he faced for sixes. He jumped down the track to fast bowler Khaled Ahmed, bowling in a Test after close to six months, to deposit him over long-on before pulling one into the filled deep square leg stands. The pair hit two fours and two sixes more to bring up India’s fifty in just three overs. It is the fastest team fifty in men’s Tests where known.

In a bid to slow India down, Bangladesh brought on Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s offspin and, though greeted with a four clubbed through midwicket, he almost struck fourth ball when Rohit was ruled out lbw. But he reviewed and survived with the ball hitting him outside the line of leg. On the next ball, though, Mehidy had the last laugh, getting one flighted ball to keep low and spin back in sharply through Rohit’s defence.

That did not deter Jaiswal, who went on a rampage against spin. India managed to hit at least one four in each of overs six to 12. In the process, Jaiswal brought up a 31-ball fifty and India got to 100 in 10.1 overs, the fastest in men’s Tests by a distance.

At the other end, Shubman Gill got his eye in and also hit a massive six over midwicket after dancing down the track to Mehidy.

This was after Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj ran through the lower order quickly after lunch as Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 about 45 minutes after lunch on the fourth day, with Ravindra Jadeja picking up his 300th Test wicket. Mominul Haque was stranded on 107.

Mehidy hit three fours in the space of seven balls against Bumrah – two of those were courtesy the width on offer. But Bumrah extracted revenge when he got one to angle in from a back of a length and got it to seam away. Mehidy was forced to play at it and edged to slip. In his next over, Bumrah beat Taijul Islam for pace while Siraj did that to Hasan Mahmud to trap him lbw.

When Jadeja dismissed the last batter to reach his bowling landmark, Bangladesh had lost 7 for 126 to concede any advantage they would have hoped to gain. And with India shaving off 138 off Bangladesh’s total within no time, the collapse seemed all the more glaring.
